Black Lives Matter

A big part of why I started this blog was to talk about what was going on in my life and the world at large. I can’t go about posting about books and life and movies or TV shows without acknowledging what’s happening in the United States right now.

All across the United States and the world, people are peacefully protesting the police brutality and white supremacy that kills Black people day in and day out.

Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, and George Floyd have all been recently killed. They aren’t the only Black people that have been killed. There are so many more Black people that have been killed that we don’t even know about.

The first Amendment of the Bill of Rights gives the citizens of this country the right to assemble, a freedom of speech and a freedom of press. All of these rights have been broken as police forces have come into these situations with tear gas, bullets and other forms of excessive force. Journalists have been arrested and hurt on camera. People have been hurt, on camera, in many ways across the United States.

Even though I am a marginalized person in the United States, there are so many privileges that I hold still. I will never know what a Black person goes through in this country or this world but I have a voice. If I don’t use my voice to show my support and make actual change, then what good is saying anything ever? I also want to put my money where my mouth is. I have not always had the money to donate, but when I do, I always do. That, white and fellow non-Black POC, is something we all need to do.

Here are some important links where you can donate money to:

  • GoFundMe for George Floyd
  • Black Visions Collective
Bail/Bonds for various cities around the country:
  • LA
  • Philadelphia
  • Chicago
  • New York City
  • Minnesota Freedom Fund
  • Bail/Bonds for Atlanta Protesters
  • Brooklyn
  • Louisville
  • Seattle
  • Portland
  • Matthew A. Cherry has a longer list of funds for other cities that you can access HERE.
I know that this post won’t make much of a difference but I truly want to do everything I can do make a difference. If I am not constantly challenging myself to do better and be a better ally, I can’t say that I believe in Black Lives Matter.

They’ve helped me calm myself down during anxious moments and moments of low self esteem. I have definitely noticed a shift in my self image by repeating affirmations often.

That’s why I’ve decided that every month I’ll share affirmations I’m trying to embody!

It hasn’t been difficult because I don’t know what to post or I haven’t gotten the graphics made. No, it’s been difficult because I can’t get out of my own head.

I keep thinking that trying to create content isn’t the best idea for me. I keek thinking that I’m not good at this even though I’ve barely tried.

So, this post is me trying to get out of my head! It’s a commitment I’m making to myself and to you that I won’t give up trying!
