I can’t believe that I went there. After so many years of seeing Grey’s Anatomy on my Netflix feed and my television, I finally began to watch all 15 seasons of the show. I’ve known about Grey’s since forever (who hasn’t?) and I have seen episodes here and there. I knew pretty much all of the big things that happened on the show but I just hadn’t watched all of the episodes. Last year, I began the process of watching the show but half way through season 3 I got bored and put the show aside. But 2020 was a new year and I decided to challenge myself. As of January 2020, I finished the last episode of season 15. This post ended up being incredibly long so I’ve decided to break it down into 3 parts: my favorite characters, my favorite couples, and random thoughts/predictions about the show (this post!)!
-Sandra Oh was amazing and her departure had a huge impact on the show.
I really didn’t understand the power that Sandra Oh had on this show until I watched the entire series. She’s always been a powerhouse actress and she really elevated any scene that she was in. Her official departure from the show really changed a lot of the relationships goin forward. Obviously, Meredith and Cristina’s friendship changed the most. I didn’t understand how much Cristina grounded Meredith until she was gone and not always a big part of her life.
-How will it end? When can it end?
This has been a question I have asked for years. Even though I haven’t watched the entire series until now, I’ve always known about certain events that have really shaken fans of the show. I can’t help but wonder how they’re going to end this show. They’re currently in season 16 and I know that season 17 will happen. Shonda Rhimes has said that the show will end when Ellen Pompeo decides to leave and I personally hope that they end the series soon. There are only so many story arcs you can give characters before it becomes too much.
-Where are they going with this new season?
And do I care? Seriously, I was already so unhappy with the show from about season 10 and onward, season 16 has currently been awful in terms of story lines. Certain lines have just become repetitive and makes me not trust the show runners. If I really don’t care about your characters that I have followed for 10 seasons, there’s something wrong there.
-Diversity on the show
I have a lot of thoughts surrounding this show. Am I glad that we’ve had Black and Asian actors/actresses on the show since it first began? Yes, I am! Over the years, we’ve had many interracial relationships that are both straight and LGBTQIA+ which is really great. We’ve now gotten a Hijabi doctor and a deaf doctor from what I gather. However, I don’t know if there’s been enough. I want more women of color on the show and more queer relationships. Even more so, I want interracial relationships that aren’t with a white person. I loved seeing Cristina and Burke and I want there to be more!
-In the end, the voice over is Meredith her writing in her journals because of Alzheimer’s
This is what I’m assuming is how this show is going to end. Ellis’ journals were such a big deal and had such an impact on the characters that I thought it would be an interesting homage to Meredith and her family. Is it sad? Yeah, I absolutely think that if Meredith got Alzhimer’s would be sad but I think that it would be a good way to bring the show to a close. Personally, I don’t think that Meredith’s happiness in with a man. As much as I think she deserves to be happy, I don’t know if her happiness lies with anyone who isn’t Derek. Maybe the show will end with Meredith and Derek meeting up again in the afterlife? I’m excited to see how Shonda will conclude this show. It’s not only one of the most iconic shows of her roster but also a fan favorite.
