Review Round Up (5): Recent DNFs

The start of a new year always leaves me wanting to start the year on a good note. I always want to start on my GoodReads reading challenge which I set at 100 again this year. I was able to get a good number of books read but I found that I had a got of books that I put aside. If there’s one thing that I have gotten really good at over the years is when to put a book away or mark them as Did Not Finish (DNF). So, here is the list of all of the books I marked as DNF and why.

A Discover of Witches by Deborah Harkness | All Souls Trilogy #1 |
DNF: 15%

Oh, man I was so excited for this book. The show looks really promising and I know many people are a huge fan of this series. But right off the bat, I knew this wasn’t going to be the book for me. I am a patient reader and I am willing to give books a chance to capture my attention but I just couldn’t with this book. I was only able to get 15% into the book before everything other than the book captured my attention. And the fact that this is a huge book also didn’t help me want to read more because I just didn’t care about any of it.

After the Flood by Kassandra Montag
DNF: 27%

I was really excited to read this after I saw Jamie rave about this book on her Instagram, I really wanted to love this book. I’m not sure what about this book didn’t click with me but I found myself once again bored. I didn’t care about the characters or the plot which is so sad considering this a apocalyptic/dystopian book. Maybe I shouldn’t judge so hard because I’m not in Myra’s situation or a mom or anything but I found her really annoying. I began by wondering if she might be an unreliable narrator but after a while, nothing she did seemed justified to me.

Ayesha at Last by Uzma Jalaluddin
DNF: 24%

I was so excited for this book. A re-telling of Pride and Prejudice and one that is unabashedly Muslim, I couldn’t wait to get my hands on this book. Obviously, I can’t speak on the Muslim rep but I have heard that it’s very good so that’s a huge positive for the novel. One the other hand, I didn’t really like Khalid and his character is what drew me away from this book. Again, I don’t want to say anything that might come off in the wrong way but I found that he was far too judgemental for me to care about. Maybe that’s why I didn’t root for his relationship with Ayesha from the beginning. There were too many connections I found between Khalid and men in my own life that left me not really interested in the rest of the story.

Have any of you read these books? Did you like them more than I did?

They’ve helped me calm myself down during anxious moments and moments of low self esteem. I have definitely noticed a shift in my self image by repeating affirmations often.

That’s why I’ve decided that every month I’ll share affirmations I’m trying to embody!

It hasn’t been difficult because I don’t know what to post or I haven’t gotten the graphics made. No, it’s been difficult because I can’t get out of my own head.

I keep thinking that trying to create content isn’t the best idea for me. I keek thinking that I’m not good at this even though I’ve barely tried.

So, this post is me trying to get out of my head! It’s a commitment I’m making to myself and to you that I won’t give up trying!
