Ever since she released folklore in June, I have been on a Taylor Swift binge. While Red is my favorite album of Taylor’s, folklore has come very close to being second or even tied for first place. We’ve finally come to an end with all of Taylor Swift’s songs. We all know that Taylor writes all of her songs, either with co-writers or by herself, and she is one of the strongest in the business. I wanted to take a moment to talk about my favorite song lyrics of her’s!
“You call me up again just to break me like a promise / So casually cruel in the name of being honest”
– “All Too Well” from “Red”
Red is my all time favorite album by Taylor Swift and I knew that “All Too Well” would have my number one lyric. I think we can all agree that this song is a songwriting masterpiece and still one of the best Taylor has written. (She does have a co-writer, Liz Rose, who worked on this song with her.)
“You made a rebel of a careless man’s careful daughter”
– “Mine” from “Speak Now”
This line is the most memorable lyric in this song for me. I immediately have an image in my mind for this. It also makes me think so much about the implications of this romance. It’s so well done.
“They told me all of my cages were mental / So I got wasted like all my potential”
– “This is Me Trying” from “Folklore”
The line hit me so hard when I first head it. If you gathered by my listening of folklore, you know that I have a lot of feelings about this song. But this line specifically h
“You said it was a great love, one for the ages / But if the story’s over, why am I still writing pages?”
–”Death By a Thousand Cuts” from “Lover”
This is such a great moment when you think about the impact of a relationship happens when it ends.
“You held your pride like you should have held me”
–– “The Story of Us” from “Speak Now”
Oh, man this lyric always hits me hard because the request is so simple yet so important. It’s also incredibly meaningful.
“With every guitar string scar on my hand / I take this magnetic force of a man to be my lover”
– “Lover” from “Lover”
Not only do the guitar string scars means all of the life she’s gone through, it also represents how much it can mean when you find someone who will take you scars and all.
“Back when you fit in my poems like a perfect rhyme”
–– “Holy Ground” from “Red”
I mean, you can replace poems and perfect rhyme with anything. I think we all have moments like this.
“I could build a castle out of all the bricks they threw at me”
– “New Romantics” from “1989”
It takes a lot to handle sticks and stones that have been thrown at us and make a home out of it.
“Barefoot in the kitchen / Sacred new beginnings / That became my religion, listen”
– “Cornelia Street” from “Lover”
I love this song, okay, but I couldn’t quote this entire song. This always reminds me that some of the most mundane and simple moments are the ones that mean the most to us. We think–and overthink–so much about the moments where we don’t have to overthink everything.
”I never lose you, hope it never ends / I’d never walk Cornelia Street again / That’s the kind of heartbreak time could never mend”
– “Cornelia Street” from “Lover”
Again, I love this song and so much about this song is finding a love like none other. To have a romance where you couldn’t be in a place that holds so many memories can be hard to handle if it’s over means so much.
“Please don’t ever become a stranger whose laugh I could recognize anywhere”
– “New Year’s Day” from “Reputation”
Isn’t this so sad and so relatable? A person’s laugh can definitely be a memorable aspect of a person. It can also be very unexpected and hurtful when you hear that sound again after a painful break up.
“Who could ever leave me, darling but who could stay?”
– “The Archer” from “Lover”
This is probably one of the two most memorable and intense lyrics from this song. Not only does it make sense for Taylor and her life, but I think that it’s relevant to people generally.
“I had a marvelous time ruining everything”
– “The Last Great American Dynasty” from “Folklore”
Even if you take it outside of the context of the song, I love so many aspects of this lyric. Aren’t the best things in life some of the ones that are most judged?
“I hate accidents except when we went from friends to this”
– “Paper Rings” from “Lover”
This lyric makes me so happy for some reason. I love the progression of friends going from being just friends to being more. It’s something that I’ve had once in my life and I think this feeling is so relatable (to those of us who want romantic relationships).
“Your faithless love’s the only hoax I believe in”
– “Hoax” from “Folklore”
This is such a great callback to Lover’s “False God.” The call back near the end of folklore showcases that their relationship isn’t perfect but it’s all she wants.
“Fighting with him was like / Trying to solve a crossword and realizing there’s no right answer.”
– “Red” from “Red”
It look so much out of me to not have all of the lyrics of this song on here. I love how she is able to showcase that love and relationships can be incredibly frustrating. Who doesn’t understand the frustration of not knowing how to solve a crossword? It’s so easy to imagine that pain.
“And all I feel / In my stomach is butterflies / The beautiful kind, making up for lost time.”
– “Everything Has Changed” from “Red”
I didn’t connect to this song until I had my first true crush. We all talk about having butterflies in our stomach but that can be negative or positive. In this case, it’s the good, funny feeling we try (or at least I do) to fight off.
“This is falling in love in the cruelest way / This is falling for you when you are worlds away”
– “Come Back… Be Here” from “Red”
There is something about this line that always resonates with me. Falling out of love with someone over a long period of time, and how we’re reminded of that moment, can be so difficult.
“People like you always want back the love they pushed aside / But people like me are gone forever when you say goodbye”
– “All You Had to Do Was Stay” from “1989”
Do I need to describe these lyrics? How often have we heard stories about our friends falling for someone but that person doesn’t like them back. But it’s not until your friend finally moves on from that person is when they come back.
“All my flowers grew back as thorns / Windows boarded up after the storm / He built a fire just to keep me warm”
– “Call It What You Want” from “reputation”
I don’t know if I can explain why I like this lyric so much but when I heard it for the first time, I spoke to me. Maybe it’s because of the stark imagery in this line. We all know flowers and we all know thorns and what both of them represent.
“And I stare at the phone, he still hasn’t called / And then you feel so low you can’t feel nothing at all”
– “Forever & Always” from “Fearless”
I listened to Fearless in its entirety for the first time this year and I was astounded at what an incredible writer Swift is. I know this feeling and I know it well and that is why it resonated with me.
“My thoughts will echo your name / Until I see you again / These are the words I held back / As I was leaving too soon / I was enchanted to meet you”
– “Enchanted” from “Speak Now”
This song is absolutely amazing and I love it so much. I’ve had this feeling before and it’s one that sticks with me throughout the years.
“Just because you’re clean don’t mean you don’t miss it”
– “Clean” from “1989”
I love this song so damn much. It’s one of the few songs that people don’t talk enough about in 1989. I’ve had moments where I know I don’t need to think of a specific person but I do anyways.
“When all you wanted was to be wanted / Wish you could go back and tell yourself what you know now / Back then I swore I was going to marry him someday / But I realized some bigger dreams of mine”
– “Fifteen” from “Fearless”
Oof this line always hits home. While I’ve never had a crush in high school or anything but this was relevant to me when I got older. It’s such an interesting feeling.
“Darling, I’m a nightmare dressed like a daydream”
– “Blank Space” from “1989”
“Blank Space” is such a fantastic song and this lyric is especially amazing. The one liners in this song are fantastic. This lyric plays beautifully into the idea that behind her sweet smile, Swift isn’t as nice as she seems.
“Time, curious time / Gave me no compasses, gave me no signs
Time, mystical time / Cuttin’ me open, then healin’ me fine
Something wrapped all of my past mistakes in barbed wire
Hell was the journey but it brought me heaven
Time, wondrous time / Gave me the blues and then purple-pink skies”
– “Invisible String” from “folklore”
I love, love, love this lyric set. I knew as soon as I heard this song that it would be one of my favorites. Time is such an important part of our lives and when it comes to romantic relationships, it can either make or break it.
“And if I’m dead to you, why are you at the wake?”
– “My Tears Ricochet” from “folklore”
Uh, hello lyric that destroys me into a million pieces. Does this need explanation?
“They told me all of my cages were mental/So I got wasted like all my potential”
– “This is Me Trying” from “folklore”
This lyric hit me hard the first time I heard it. I’ve had many moments in my life where I feel like I’ve given so much to something/someone and felt like I’d wasted my time.
“Cause all of my enemies started out friends”
– “The Archer” from “Lover”
Damn, this line always gets me. This always hits home for me especially when I think about how much friendships ending can cause so much pain.
“Why’d I have to break what I love so much?”
– “Afterglow” from “Lover”
Does this lyric need an explanation? I think it’s so damn relevant to what happens in our life.
“I don’t wanna look at anything else now that I saw you”
– “Daylight” from “Lover”
As I said in my review of the entire album, I don’t think that “Daylight” gets the credit it deserves. It’s such a wonderful look at her current relationship and incredibly romantic.
“I once believed love would be (black and white)
But it’s golden (golden)
I once believed love would be (burnin’ red) But it’s golden”
– “Daylight” from “Lover”
I love that she comes back to two of her previous albums is this verse. “Black and white” for reputation and “burnin’ red” for Red.
